Great Gelato – How-to Guide.
There are three major styles of ice creams in Western world: Philadelphia-style (no eggs, egg whites and cream), French-style(whole eggs and cream) and, of-course, Italian-style gelato (no eggs, with cream and light milk).
Modern gelato or ice cream is said to have been invented in Italy in 1660’s and in 1686 first ice cream machine was made and perfected by Sicilian fisherman Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, and ice cream started to spread all over Europe, and then the world.
So there is no surprise that millions of people from all around the world come here, to Italy to try some of the best ice creams in the world.
But the question is: how do you find the best gelato? How do you know where to go, what to look for and what to avoid? Well, it is pretty simple, really, and in this post we will give you few tips and trick on how to find the best gelateria or ice cream shop in town.
First: to have some good ice cream, you have to go to gelateria, not a restaurant, bar or coffee-shop, but a gelateria. Second and very important: home made or artigianale does not mean good, and chain or franchise does not mean bad. Some of the best ice cream shops in Rome are actually franchises. Third: look for natural looking gelato, nothing too vivid, no electric blue or neon green. And last, but not least, look at the customers, if they are smiling and looking happy, the ice cream is just great.
Here are two examples of great franchise ice cream shops:
1. GROM you can find it everywhere in the center of the city.
2. La Romana the most central location is Via XX Settembre, 60.
